Strokes Star Julian Casablancas on His New Solo...
The album’s title “Phrazes for the Young” comes from Oscar Wilde’s “Phrases and Philosophies for the Use of the Young.” What about Oscar Wilde do you admire?
Did I say I admired him? No, I’m kidding…He did have some quotes that I like, like I think it’s “the old believe everything, the middle-aged suspect everything and the young know everything” or something like that. I just sort of stumbled upon it and the name struck me like “Whoa what is this? Teach me, oh wise one.” And I kind of read it and it was cool and it was well-written and smart. The name I thought was cool. It was floating around on the last Strokes record but I thought the lyrics weren’t good enough to be called something like that. So I kind of worked a lot on making sure the name wasn’t wasted.
The solo album has a much more electronic sound.
Not necessarily. A little bit. The main foundation was kind of drums, polyrhythms, not like the traditional kind of drums and percussion you have. I had ideas on that that I wanted to develop.
You kept the album very short. Why was that important to you?
It wasn’t really. It’s kinda all I had time for. Plus, we’re selling the record for $4.99. I wanted it to be that price from the beginning. [The length] helped my argument with the record label. That’s a good price for records. A fair price—5 bucks.
You recorded a song with comedian Andy Samberg’s band, The Lonely Island. Do you think you’d join that group if you ever left the Strokes?
I don’t think I have to leave the Strokes to play with Lonely Island. Besides, they have their unit locked up. They don’t need me.
